If you plan to resize/crop images, it is better to capture in png and convert only when/after resizing, else there is a quality loss.
This allows to remove black borders and eventually compress more if needed (i.e. 80% quality / 20% compression), though hat I think VLC's compression is acceptable, unlike MPC which makes way too big JPEGs.
