I've never heard of a parking brake that operates on anything besides the rear wheels, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
There shouldn't be any wear/heat if the wheel's not spinning, I don't know why your brakes got so hot. Maybe the parking brake isn't strong enough to keep the wheels locked while they're being dragged. :shrug:
You're a pretty new driver, right? Once you get a little more experience it will seem obvious if you're driving with the parking brake on.
