Maybe the parking brake isn't strong enough to keep the wheels locked while they're being dragged.
Yes, that's most likely the case. The force of the acceleration was enough to free the wheels from the clamp of the brake. But the brake was still grinding against the wheels as they were spinning, creating much friction, and thus heat.
You're a pretty new driver, right? Once you get a little more experience it will seem obvious if you're driving with the parking brake on.
Yes, well I sure hope so! Though now I try to pay attention more now that this has happened, so hopefully I won't ever forget to take it off in the first place again, which would eliminate the problem all together I suppose
