Don't forget, in the UK, the elderly guy in a trilby hat and smoking a pipe, driving a Vauxhall Corsa, Nissan Micra or Ford Fiesta in the middle of the road at 25 mph in built-up areas and 37 mph elsewhere (except on motorways, where he will frighten himself to death at 52 mph).



:lol: That's exactly how my grandma drives when I'm riding with her! She goes down a 35 mph road no faster than 23 in her enormous red Crown Victoria with it's left turn signal still on from when she left the driveway, and everyone is passing us and some even give her the finger. I know it's an old person sterotype but it's true for her! :lol: I don't think old people should be allowed to have a lisence if they drive like that :rolleyes:

Actually, My car is Front Wheel Drive. :grin: One day I'll make a video driving in it, but I can't drive and hold the camera at the same time so I'll need help with that. I'm not sure about a burnout because I don't want to take a lot of chances. It is possible to do burnout in a FWD too. :wink:

Really? I did not know you could do a burnout with FWD. Of course you'd still have to have a powerful enough engine to do it. Plus it is quite destructive to the car, especially the tires and brakes :grin:

I'm very surprised your car is FWD though, the front wheels are pushed up so far to the front... I guess maybe they did that to make it look like a RWD car :grin:

Also you can just have a friend or a parent or a sibling hold the camera for you, that's what I did :smile:
Though sometimes it can be quite hard to get them to get the kind of shots you want. I had some trouble trying to explain this to my dad when I made the videos of my grandma's Crown Victoria :tongue:

If I make a cruising kind of video I'll drive down Pacific Coast highway and do it. My grandmother could help with that. It may be hard doing a burnout for me (Never done one) because I don't want to wreck the car. If I do a burnout, I'll wait until it's time to get new tires. Here's a Saturn burnout. It's actually easier with FWD, you just put the handbrake on and hammer the gas. No wear on the brakes at all.

A funny story about parking brakes. One day I was out driving around with my dad, looking through the city's used car dealers (we were not looking to buy, we just like to look at cars :grin: ). I had been driving for quite a while, when we stopped at a dealer to look around. My dad got out of the car and walked past one of the rear wheels, when he noticed a strange heat emitting off of it. He put his hand down behind the wheel and it was hot as fire, he said to me "Max, I think you left the parking brake on" I checked, and indeed I had :grin:
Fortuneately it didn't do much damage to the car (that we could see). But now I'm especially careful to check if the brake is on before I drive, though I often still forget... :kiki:

Well, I did notice I had to push down on the gas pedal a bit harder to get the car to go :tongue:

But have you ever driven a car with the brake on? After the initial go from a stop (which takes a bit of power) it feels relatively unnoticeable other than the car seems a little slower. And no it was not just the car I was in because I have driven multiple cars with the parking brake on and it is the same way.

I've never driven with thb parking break on, but one time I backed out of the driveway too fast without releasing it, so the breaks made a clinging noise. Another time I moved the car after I parked it and I had to release the break. On my car you can tell if the break is still on.

That probably has something to do with it. The one I was talking about in my story (my Camry) was an automatic. Though I did drive my Accord which is manual with the parking brake on once, and I didn't notice anything except that I had to rev the engine a lot more. I don't think a lack of power would be a problem though, because my Camry is about the least powerful thing there is, other than maybe a Dodge Aries. :tongue:
By the way, are you saying your car(s) are not powerful? Would this be your old Volvos you are refering to or another car?

I've never heard of a parking brake that operates on anything besides the rear wheels, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
There shouldn't be any wear/heat if the wheel's not spinning, I don't know why your brakes got so hot. Maybe the parking brake isn't strong enough to keep the wheels locked while they're being dragged. :shrug:

You're a pretty new driver, right? Once you get a little more experience it will seem obvious if you're driving with the parking brake on.

Yes, that's most likely the case. The force of the acceleration was enough to free the wheels from the clamp of the brake. But the brake was still grinding against the wheels as they were spinning, creating much friction, and thus heat.

Yes, well I sure hope so! Though now I try to pay attention more now that this has happened, so hopefully I won't ever forget to take it off in the first place again, which would eliminate the problem all together I suppose :tongue:
