I updated the "origin" of most of the vehicles (major makes, except the few for which I did not know what to put).
I left Ford for later, as it depends on the models
13/08/2006 @ 20:58:54: antp: New fields for this week-end
I have put here a copy of the contents of the function that does the automatic replacement of "origin" field if left empty.
Do not hesitate to suggest missing makes, and suggest a list of models for Ford:
www.imcdb.org/temp/auto-origin.txt
13/08/2006 @ 21:24:55: G-MANN: New fields for this week-end
Did you have to go through every car manually to change the origin?
13/08/2006 @ 21:41:37: antp: New fields for this week-end
No, I did that with SQL queries for the makes listed on the main page.
Like "
update car_s set vehicle_origin = 'US' where vehicle_make = 'Cadillac'" and 1300+ cars were updated
Same for some models of each make: I'll do that for the Fords, and do manually the few models remaining.
So you only have to do manually the makes that have few cars (for which it goes fast to do it manually, as fast as typing the SQL query).
There are few "major" makes that I left for later because I had to check first if the country that I thought is right. And the makes for which we have 10-20 cars that are not on the main page and so that I did not made already.
13/08/2006 @ 22:08:18: wickey: New fields for this week-end
make Ford croen vic, it will be about 422 + mustang another 420
13/08/2006 @ 22:36:18: antp: New fields for this week-end
yes
no need to do that manually, tomorrow I will do them by SQL.
13/08/2006 @ 23:55:43: antp: New fields for this week-end
How do we list "Dodge Barreiros"? As "origin = spain" or as "origin = USA" and "made for = spain"? (depends if the models were the same as the US ones, I guess)
14/08/2006 @ 11:51:36: antp: New fields for this week-end
Help!
What do we do for the Ford Mondeo / Mercury Mystique / Ford Contour?
The Mondeo was significant as its design and marketing was shared between Ford USA in Dearborn, and Ford of Europe.
DE for the Mondeo and USA for the two others? Though it is the same basis...
I have put KR as country for the Festiva and the Aspire, as they are just rebadged korean cars. I guess that I do the same for the Geo and other rebadged Chevrolet?
14/08/2006 @ 12:10:06: antp: New fields for this week-end
Ford Falcon: I know that Australia has a model and US had another, but what about Europe? Was it a model from Ford UK or Ford DE ? Or was it the same as the US model ?
14/08/2006 @ 12:12:54: antp: New fields for this week-end
One of the admins hasn't seen this topic and the new country field
Each time I do a search I find new cars with a country between "(...)"
14/08/2006 @ 13:20:48: antp: New fields for this week-end
What country for "AC", "AC Shelby" and "AC Cobra" ? though most are replicas...
14/08/2006 @ 16:05:43: antp: New fields for this week-end
Well, I continue to speak alone here
I finished A & B makes, except AC and the "Blotto".
If you change countries of "major" makes (i.e. those that we can find often in movies, usually those that have more 2 or 3 vehicles on imcdb) please list it here so I know that I have to include them in the automatic replacement list that I posted above.
14/08/2006 @ 16:31:53: Alexander: New fields for this week-end
So that you are no longer alone let me answer some of your topics...
AC is GB
AC Shelby/AC Cobra should (probably) be named Shelby American (USA) ... some research needed.
Ford Falcon was not a German model, and I think not a British either.
For all the badge engineered cars (Daewoo sold as Chevrolet, etc.) the Origin is the place were it was produced. So A 'Chevrolet Matiz' would be Origin: South Korea -- Made for: EU.
Same for
Dodge Barreiros: Origin: Spain
Dodge Renault: Origin: United Kingdom
We don't want the owner (now DaimlerChrysler) but where it was produced.
Only if a production site is a plant of a company that just happens to be in a different country but has no roots there and no independent production, only then I would use the country of the main company. If a car is identifyable as being made in, lets say Australia, we should use that country as country of origin.
Specific Australian models are, for example:
Leyland Mini Moke

http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_16315-Leyland-Mini-Moke-1966.html
International Harvester of Australia (that's the full name)
http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_11147-International-Harvester.html

Thanks for the list
For me Bugatti is French. Still now. Cf
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bugatti_Automobiles_SAS
I do not think that it is useful to add CS flag as it is the same as the Czech one; can't we consider that CS vehicles = CZ ?
I will add the DDR flag, I noticed that it was missing when renaming Trabant, Wartburg and Barkas. I first set country = Germany, madefor = DDR, but it is not very accurate (and as we added USSR, why not DDR).
Shall I add an EU flag, or do we consider that Ford Europe is now D, like I did?

Thanks for the list
More will follow...
For me Bugatti is French.
Actually for me, too. But might not be correct, certainly not for the very first (<1918).
I do not think that it is useful to add CS flag as it is the same as the Czech one; can't we consider that CS vehicles = CZ ?
The Flag is the same, but not the mouse-over text.
Shall I add an EU flag, or do we consider that Ford Europe is now D, like I did?
Ford Europe has it's company seat in Cologne, so D would be correct. But if you add the EU flag it wouldn't do any harm. Perhaps some members would rather like to use that instead of a national flag.
14/08/2006 @ 17:09:10: antp: New fields for this week-end
Yes, that's for that reason that I was planning to add EU flag.
For the CS flag, I can add a duplicate of the CZ one, but in my 2-letter codes the CS is already used for Serbia & Montenegro
14/08/2006 @ 18:42:56: antp: New fields for this week-end
I've done Alex's list.
Less than 10% of vehicle without country info on the site... but that represent about 60% of the makes

Even if the new mini is produced in UK, it was designed by BMW people I guess. I am not sure that it should be considered as an English car
Well, I will do the change, it is not a major problem anyway
By the way, is the latest Rolls-Royce still a UK car?
