Nope, it doesn't spell "CAT" behind the driver seat. Thats just the grille. Look at old CAT logo here:

do some more research

old CAT dozers did have CAT and model written on the fuel tank without the sticker

see here, D8H even

*grmph* You are right that on very old ones they wrote the letters instead of putting stickers on it. Under my research i only found that they write "CATERPILLAR" and not just CAT.

Anyway, in my opinion that is just the grille and not letters. As you can see on your pictures the letters are smaller. As i said, if you give me a good reliable proof i stand back and say its okay. At this point i cant tell what vehicle it is, but i dont see a Caterpillar there.

Purzel what are talking about ?

the fuel tank is the right shape, the curbed engine panel is a dead give away, the sterring column screams Caterpillar and if you look carefully the letters on the right are T on top and H on bottom because CAT D8H is written on it and this is the correct dozer for the time period and looks like it

Okay after putting your picture right next to it i can finally outmake the letters "CAT" in the first line, but the letters in second line are unreadable. Whats with this strange cab design?
09/05/2016 @ 20:52:05: mike962: Non-Unidentified Vehicles
the last letter at bottom is H

until the late 70s machines such as this as did tractors were actually sold cabinless and as result there were a bunch of aftermarket ones , starting from the 80s they had standard cabins and introduced stuff like AC on them
