Subject: Hosting of the website, space available

Currently we are on a 2 GB web space at OVH, in shared hosting, on a "mediaplan" account.
Today they launched something interesting... we can chose between (1) security or (2) space.

(1) : 5 backup copies of previous days, available all the time, can be useful if we overwrite/delete a file by accident, since I only make a local backup every two weeks.

(2) : no backup (was like that until today), but then they multiply the available space by... 10 !
So it would mean that we would have 20 GB of space rather than 2

That will be quite useful for 2007

Pour les francophones qui veulent des détails :

And anoter nice info by the way: they will move to MySQL 4.1 (we have version 4.0 currently), so that will probably solve the sorting/search problems that we have currently with ö/ä/ü characters of German makes.

Et on peut pas avoir les deux ?
Sinon, fais comme tu le sens, c'est toi le webmaster!
Perso, je prendrais l'espace. Si l'hébergeur a toujours une copie...
12/03/2006 @ 20:29:49: antp: Hosting of the website, space available

I'd say go for the space and do manual backups.
08/08/2006 @ 09:36:35: antp: Hosting of the website, space available
By the way, I will soon have to do that switch: a little more than 300 MB remaining, more than 1600 MB used.
I think that I will do that in end of August or begininng of septembre. There will probably be a small time (i.e. 1 day) where I will have to prevent any change to the site, i.e. lock posting of new comments, and lock all admin links.

ok, btw I would like to ask, if it is for you bearable to sponsore the site by yourself.. I think in case you will need some money for the site, we should make a donation or something.
08/08/2006 @ 14:36:26: antp: Hosting of the website, space available
Actually the Google ads pay more than what the site costs, so currently IMCDb do not need any donation. But thanks for thinking to that
Some day I will have to move the site to a dedicated server (or semi-dedicated) when it will grow more, but even at that time I think that it will still be OK, as the number of visitors increase.

Ya, go with space. More space for my comments :ddr555: .
08/08/2006 @ 17:14:40: antp: Hosting of the website, space available
What I was mentionning is spaces for files (i.e. pictures).
The comments are stored in the database, which will be the next problem, as it currently is at 50% of its size and will maybe not be expandable so easily...

Oh,

I always wondered antp, or anyone else with antp's power, is it possible to have a page setup on vehicle and movie comments, similar to most forums includeing the IMCDb forums? It should help, I would think. Especially with pages with never ending discussion like the Scorpio page, and pages long in general like Maximum Overdrive.
08/08/2006 @ 18:27:49: antp: Hosting of the website, space available
Actually pages are already splitted in several views, like the "view all comments".
As you mentionned neverending discussions, I do not see what would be the use of that.
- scorpio page: I archived all useless posts, now the page loads fast and the old discussion is on a separate & splitted page.
- maximum overdrive: I should clean it too, it was not a normal page, as most of it contains comments about Rocker BJ
So as I said yesterday the only pages that cause problems are page that should not exist. There are lots of off-topic pages that do not have any problem, just because there is a normal discussion with normal people, rather than a SUV discussion with you.

:fou_fuck:
08/08/2006 @ 19:44:19: antp: Hosting of the website, space available
:fou_fuck: to you too.
Btw, in the case you missed it, I did not delete any of your comments. They are still visible through the "see archived comments" link...
08/08/2006 @ 19:53:24: dwd4X4: Hosting of the website, space available
So F*cking what? They are visible in the useless area, where no one will bother to look. They are useless there. :fou_fuck:
08/08/2006 @ 20:25:10: antp: Hosting of the website, space available
They were already useless so I do not see what is the problem... (and you are off-topic again btw, this topic was about the hosting of the site, not about yourself)

And please not that you can be lucky that I am patient, if it was depending on other people, your comments would have been completely deleted
08/08/2006 @ 23:12:08: dwd4X4: Hosting of the website, space available
Why are you blaming me? You are offtopic too! You seem to forget how many times YOU are offtopic, like on the Merku page you were talking about a Citroen!
08/08/2006 @ 23:50:11: antp: Hosting of the website, space available
It was a discussion about cars modified for US-specs, like the Merkur
08/08/2006 @ 23:50:51: dwd4X4: Hosting of the website, space available
So that counts? What about SUV safety on SUV page? I suppose that doesn't count.
