My car, a 1989 Ford Tempo AWD Sedan, has a "Good" (or four stars) for both direct and off set frontal impacts according to NHTSA. It is unrated in side impact. NHTSA also says Tempo has an "acceptable" death rate and marginal injury rate. I somewhat think those results are a bit optimistic after seeing the actual crash test footage. The IIHS has not rated Tempo in any category. Below is a link to the side impact crash test footage.

Not good. But not as bad as my mom's minivan (Chevy Venture/Opel Sintra), which was just horrendous. My mom didn't think they could legally sell a vehicle so dangerous..

About the question, I doubt that these ratings are comparable: I doubt that the 4-star of a '89 Tempo are the same than the 4-star of Euroncap tests 10 years later...

Yes, perhaps Tempo had four stars for a car of its time. Can't imagine it would get four stars by today's standards.

About my car, the Peugeot 206 gets 4 stars out of 5 in Euroncap, I guess that the SW version would have a similar rating.

My car has an acceptible crash test rating from the IIHS. About average.

My car is a Volvo. I don't care about stars

Indeed ... Volvos are naturally safe. No need to worry about crash testing those ...

My Crown Vic does well (unless hit hard from behind)but my '83 Chevy Truck....well,it kills people just sitting there in the driveway?? (My 72 Olds --like the one by my sig-- wasn't listed...but it's been in two pretty good wrecks where I it drove home,but what hit me wouldn't even roll??)

Great idea, but damned if I can figure out where to find the star rating for my car, a 1998 Buick LeSabre Limited, on the IIHS website. I did find that it has a 44% lower risk of personal injury, a 29% lower risk of collision, and an 87% lower risk of vehicle theft vs the average amount of risk for any 1997-1999 four-door passenger car tested. I picked my daily driver, an 89 Jaguar XJ6 but it wasnt listed on iihs or ncap. on safe car guide it was listed as excellent, but with no detailed analysis.

However The strength of the Jaguar XJ is one of the primary reasons I drive one, they are actually 2nd strongest after Rolls Royce.

The SI, II, III & XJ40 have the strongest bodywork of all the Jaguars, so much so that theres a British stuntman who drives an unstrengthened SI, II & III XJ6 through a row of flaming cars(upended) & always makes it through the other end, sometimes with 1 or 2 burning cars upside down on his roof!

I find this strangely comforting when I`m on the motorway with my kids in the back with an articulated truck up my arse.

I`ve also had a couple of accidents in previous Jaguars with impressive results.

About 3 years ago I went squarely into the back of a 97 Ford Fiesta at around 15MPH, the only damage my Daimler sustained was a sligtly twisted bumper which pulled back fine & a crack in the top of the grille where the D badge sits which i soldered back. The metalwork was untouched as was the headlights & the indicators (mounted in the bumper!).

However the Fiesta was so badly damaged that the tailgate was pushed into the boot area, glass shattered over the interior, the rear seat had been pushed forward, the roof was creased around the sunroof, the wheels were touching the rear arches & the rear doors wouldnt open!

There was only the driver in the Fiesta luckily & he was fine, but I dread to think what the consiquenses would have been if there had been a couple of kids in the back.....

Also bear in mind Jaguars are low & my bumper met his at the same level, imagine if I had been driving a 4x4 with bull bars or a truck with the bumper at the Fiestas glass level...

I took the kids out in the Ford Ka a twice, the last time I drove it with them a few months ago I had a Transit school minibus driving about 3` from my back bumper, I was behind a bus in a narrow road going slowly up a hill, I couldnt go anywhere. His bumper was literally 4` from the back of my kids heads. I ended up stopping & getting out, I felt like attacking him & might have done if he had had the balls to get out his van....Thats when I decided to sell the Ka....

Nah mate! and I wouldnt recomend anyone does!

I'm NOT INTERESTED in crash test results. I just try to drive safely and defensively. Of course we ALL are at the mercy of the "other driver". But when your number is up, it doesn't matter how many air bags deploy in your "safe" auto!
