I remember these being very common when I was a kid, you basically never see them in Toronto anymore.
28/06/2009 @ 07:16:09: taxiguy: My dad bought a new (old) car
They're not at all uncommon here in Lansing becuase this is Olds-town and they were built here. Though most of them aren't quite as nice as this one is.

nice choice 'dad of taxiguy'. Very luxurious. What has he swapped it for?
28/06/2009 @ 07:56:26: taxiguy: My dad bought a new (old) car
It's going to be more of a spare car. He's not getting rid of anything else at the moment.

Nice original car, you should take care of it and store it covered and dry.
Does is have rust-conservation inside body and chassis? If not, you should make it. The money for that is a good investment in the future.

Wow, you guys can always find old cars in great shape like that. Restore them all, and they can be worth lots in the future.

If the car is in very good, original condition, a restoration is not necessary. It would be even worse und let the value go down, if you would do it.
A good original is always much better.

Gosh Max how do you just do it?!! you guys can always find old cars in great shape, another thing i imagine is that in your place car insurance prices must be laughable, because you have quite a car park there!

Don't worry, you have the same chances.
It's just a question of patience, good connections and a bit luck. But much money isn't neccessary. Than sooner or later you will find everything, you ever were looking for.
Just try it by yourself.

If you don't put a car in registration, you don't have to pay taxes and insurance for it. Then you cat let it stand around on your private property until eternity.

Yes whenever i can afford it
though i look for cars all the time, as a pastime
but the prices in here are enver that low sadly.

Oh dear Ingo and the point of that is...?
in Max's case it is odd because he has all his cars riding, so he pays for all the cars he has, whichever that number is

Very nice car

Well, about the insurance and registration, we only have it on the two Camrys, my Dodge, and this one since those are the ones we drive often. My dad doesn't have any on the two Volkswagens becuase they mostly sit in the garage. If he does decide to start driving them around like he does sometimes in the summer, he simply puts the insurance back on and takes it off when he's done with it for the season. The rates are between 300-600 dollars per year, depending on the car. I think the '85 Camry is lowest at just under 300 dollars and my Dodge is the highest (since it is by far worth the most) at around 600 dollars. Not sure on the price of the Olds yet, we have yet to find out.

Thats still really cheap for insurance, not sure of ours, nut I know when I get my car it will be in th thousands (I'm a high risk driver).
I was once looking at a Ford Probe, around $5,000. It's insurance, for an 18 year old (how old when you get liscne)-$6,500.
Thats why so many cars arn't insured, as it is to much. most people just have 3rd party.
29/06/2009 @ 02:11:03: MBSL65fan: My dad bought a new (old) car
When it comes to beginner drivers, many parents put their kids on their insurance policy. Insurance for me in no cheaper than $1200 per year at the lowest on full coverage. We have Triple A. Taxiguy, with your insurance, is it full or half coverage?
29/06/2009 @ 02:24:40: taxiguy: My dad bought a new (old) car
My Dodge is in my father's name so it is cheaper. It's the only car that has collision (since it is the only one that is worth a good amount) and all the others have the minimum requirement.

I know, it baffles the hell out of me. Whenever I finally decide to retire from work, and I start loosing interest in traveling about, I’ll be sure to contact Max to help me find a classic car (as owning a classic is one thing I want after I retire, to keep me busy)
29/06/2009 @ 05:12:27: taxiguy: My dad bought a new (old) car
Well, it's hardly a classic, I mean it's much too new. But I know what you mean...
29/06/2009 @ 05:57:54: qwerty_86: My dad bought a new (old) car
That is a beautiful car.
