Who ever mention that "update" on the wikipedia basically didn't do it right enough. Since alot of things in Wiki aren't still all correct.

For all Toyota Land Cruiser "[FZJ80]", chassis-code is "[J80]".
http://www.imcdb.org/vehicles_make-Toyota_model-FZJ80.html

Toyota:
We decided some time ago to use only Jx0 codes and not the first-letter or the last number variants as it was impossible to identify accurately in most of the case. Also, it has not much interest, these codes are more useful to regroup generations when model names exist across many years.

I was the one who added those FZJ80 codes a few months ago ! I do know J40 & J70 are nearly impossible to identify accurately, with all those engine and wheelbase variations, but it's easier for the J60 & J80. Unless that really bothers someone, I wouldn't mind to re-add them.

I also did all the NCP91 ! And now they're gone. I'll be honest, this is personally very frustrating. :halalala:

Yes, I've been busy a lot with Toyota codes these past months. The subject is arduous but more interesting than I first thought. I've worked with the following rule. If we know the exact chassis code for a Toyota, let's use it. Be it AE111 for that Corolla, or NCP91 for that Yaris, or CLR10 for that Previa Diesel. But if we don't know the exact code, then we use E110, XP90 or XR10, and so on.

Also, did someone rename all XR10 codes (Toyota Previa/Estima) to "TCR" recently ? Sorry, but that one does piss me off (pardon my french), because not all of them have a "T" engine. That's why I've been using those general XR10 codes, like we do for the later XR30 & XR50.

I've updated hundreds of entries manually over the past year, because being precise doesn't bother me, and now I see my work is getting wiped out, chunk after chunk.

I am livid, just livid. Please stop asking for these mass renamings without any reason.

This is why if you're making anything other than a basic, obvious update you need to comment. As others will never understand why something is listed one way when something similar is listed another...
14/07/2019 @ 19:21:26: Exiv96: Mass change model info thread
But where do I comment on those changes ? Not on every updated entry, like some do.

But in these instances, it doesn't matter if there is a comment or not. JB is calling for mass changes to go from the more specific codes to basic generic ones, which he shouldn't be doing. This goes along with the other thread about the "Made for" line. People taking things that would actually help people search for specific models, and diluting them so we end up with hundreds or thousands of indistinguishable cars.

For the J-something, as far as I knew we were just using the generic ones
I'm not sure it has much interest to have more detailed codes, the generic ones are good for separating by generation these models.

Sorry for the work loss :ohwell:
Maybe it could be better that we ask you before doing mass changes on Japanese vehicles.
I don't know how we could handle these cases. Maybe have a period of wait between the request and its application?
But to have that workable, there should be some structure, not just posts in a thread here. That's difficult to manage then.
But we could have that at least for mass changes that overwrite existing info.
So one thread for basic/obvious changes (codes that are currently empty for example), and another one for those where input from other members could be needed.

If necessary, or it could even have worked as a post on an individual entry or a forum post. Not just for tracking the changes, but also to enable discussion about it. I'm not really meaning this but more than more I'm seeing stuff change in random ways and wondering WTF has happened and why - because certain admins are acting unilaterally.

I understand your unhappiness, but without any means of tracking/understanding it it gives the impression that it could be different people using different systems or even something that's wrong, so someone else comes along and decides to change it. It's like when a Mercedes or BMW have a very specific derivative given, certain people would always immediately jump on an assumption that the identification was a guess.

But I'm not in the mood for a fight about it.

I thought about doing something like that, a "I'd like to do something about this" or "I've done this and that", but then I wasn't sure if I'd get any feedback. Some forum posts don't get a lot of attention...

Still, regarding Toyota, I'd like to know. Do we go back to general chassis codes, like XP130 and E80... and getting rid of all the AE86's in the procedure ? Or do we go the more detailed way ?

My preference would be for your more precise system.

Thanks. Anyway, back to the subject of this topic : is it possible to change all the "TCR" coded Toyotas back to "XR10" ?
