Chase/Crash info for each car
Published 14/11/2007 @ 18:05:03, By antp
CarChasesFanatic is asking me since some time that I add a feature to easily find chases/crashes info.
After Wasserspeier's comment on http://www.imcdb.org/movie.php?id=1075746 I create this topic to collect idea/comments, so when I will have time to add it at least I will not miss things that other people may expect.

So as he suggests:
Involved in chase: Yes|No|Unknown
Crashed: Yes|No|Unknown
Damaged: Yes|No|Unknown
I already see a problem between crashed and damaged... what both means exactly? We could also include destroyed/damaged notion, as some damage is repairable, but it becomes too difficult I think (especially since for low-value car damaged=destroy, as it costs too much to repair, the opposite for high-value car, like a F40: even if destroyed it can be rebuilt)

I see. Next problem would be if it was a replica or only a shell that was destroyed.
Suggestion (like the stars for the role of a car):
0 = Unknown|No damage
1 = Little damage
2 = Medium damage
3 = Lots of damage, repairable for fans
4 = Totally destroyed

and then let the people decide which fits the best assignment. After a little discussion ( :crazy: ) we will find the correct number.

Have fun,
Wasserspeier

There is also "destroyed by CGI" (cf the Jaguar XJR recently added). The empty shell is indeed also interesting to mention separately.
Anyway I do not think that it is useful to have a too precise info in a field: that can be put in comment.
And is it useful to have a field for that anyway? That can be said in comments.
It is rather useful to have fields to know if it is involved in a crash or in a chase, so that can be displayed on movie page and/or be found easily using an option (to add) in the search page.

Well, first of all thanks a lot Antoine for remembering this and always having it into account :wink:

Second, i think that this of little damage, a lot of damage, etc is not useful at all, namely because a lot of users will find it boring, all i wanted when this idea was created was to just exactly know wether a car is actually involved in a car chase (which we now cant know since three stars is for both car chases and use frecuently by a character) or in a car crash.

In case there are replicas involved or shells with a comment said it would be enough, if we have the case that a completely different car has been used for the crash scene, then, that different car will have the rate of Destroyed or used in a car crash, as it was only used in that little scene, we have some of these cases already.

And perhaps it would be good to have another option to say if the car was destroyed in a crash by using CGI, also (this might sound complicated but it wont be) we will have to see the difference between wether the car was involved in a crash only or in a whole car chase, but theres a draw back in this, that sometimes we may not know the car is also involved in a crash appart from a car chase so.

To simplify things, if we have a car like http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_1896-BMW-535i-E34-1991.html or like http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_109730-Chevrolet-Chevelle-SS-1969.html we probably should say, INVOLVED IN A CRASH and USED IN A CAR CHASE and in cases like http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_106861-Spyker-C8-Spyder-2006.html or like http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_3103-Peugeot-406-1996.html we will only have to say INVOLVED IN A CAR CHASE.

Antoine understand that?? if you want me to rewrite something just tell me, or if theres something you dont understand.

I think that I understood well with the examples, that was something like that that I was thinking.
There is also the case of a car in a crash without chase, e.g. http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_15413-Citroen-Saxo-1996.html

Yes. I'd say that the easiest would be two options in the car attributes:
[] Involved in a chase
[] Involved in a crash
So for each car you can check none, one or the two.

exactly, and i think there nothing else to add there, i guess that the thing about CGI/replicas/other cars could be just said on comments or would it be good to have a field for that too?

I understand CarChasesFanatic's interests but frankly don't see the need to include such informatin on the site. I personally think that there are already too many categories of stuff and would really prefer to eliminate some rather than adding more.

After all, we are not a movie review or rating service are we?

This woul not be part of a review at all, and it is still more accurate useful information about the car, saying wether it was involved in a chase or a car crash is not bad, i think it is useful.

and if i was asking for a review ok, i would understand admins and Antoine's diagreeing for that, we have varaces for this kind of info ok, but adding two more starts (or anything Antoine invents to this) isnt that bad, as i said it is just more tidy and useful information, so now we will not have a doubt if a car with three stars is just used by a character or also used in a car chase :smile:

Honestly, I think that it is not up to IMCDB to add these info as there is already a site supposed to do that, i.e. Varaces, but as this site does not seem to live a lot (not much update) and that IMCDB became so more complete, I guess it is a kind of info that we could include...
There is no need of such info, but it would not harm much. Retrospectively, I think that I should have added that rather than this "origin" country field that leads to so many discussions :grin:

My personal interest is the identity of a car - mainly year and make. I don't look to this site to see what a movie is about. I don't much like movie chases/crashes because they are so obviously over blown and fake but understand and respect other opinions.

Its just that I think a lot of the stuff we list is somewhat superfluous and hate to see more. For example, anyone can look at a picture and know that its a car, a motorcycle, a truck or a fork lift so why all the categories? :grin:

From that standpoint, your suggestion may be more worthwhile than some of the other stuff we list- at least you can't usually determine a chase or crash by looking at a single pictures. :wink:

Actually they are there to allow to make searches rather than for info. Thought that actually they may be useful when there are multiple vehicles on the picture.

Well i do not exactly to see what the movie is about, but you know i like browsing the movies users add and look for car action in them, and if i was only doing that then of course i would be very cheecky for asking for a thing who only meis going to use, but i think (although Antoine finally doesnt do it) that i can ask for this as i contribute a lot in the site (others more than me i know, but i still contribute a lot) with this i dont mean it should be added because i deserve it with this i want to state that i deserve at least asking for it, later on if it is for bad ok and if it is for better then great.

Also thats the problem, car action is not always visible as Wrenchhead says as i think its only me who preferes adding (not all the time only in some exceptions) a picture of the car destroyed rather than puting one of the car non destroyed, so just to put an example, in this movie http://www.imcdb.org/movie_478737-Treasure-Raiders.html the white 5 series gets totalled, the Saratoga does as well, the same for four of the taxis, the Mercedes features a rollover too and the Vaz Oka explodes, i was very surprised at how much destruction this movie had since by the photos i didnt have any idea.

And i know, some fo you might be thinking now, well Adrián it is only you the one interested in that car action, well at least there are two other users that like knowing about these too :bave:

That is, varaces is starting to feel a bit "oldy" and boring now, and im not only saying this here i have said it on its forum as well and mentioned my opinion about the site nowadays.

First i wouldnt compare the info imcdb can give to me and the info varaces can give as well, its different, while in imcdb i can know till the smallest detail of a car chase or car crash, all i have in varaces is a description which it is even fake sometimes as it comes from people that make it look spectacular or tell things that doesnt really happen in the chase, when it later is a crap, a photo of it is just sometimes added but when one is updated it crashes in a few days because off a problem.

Also imcdb shows me (us) every car involved in the chase or the crash thing that varaces mostly doesnt since it has a very small list of vehicles to add so people just dont bother on adding the vehicles always or if they do they cant do a complete list, with this it comes to my mind that Spanish prover or saying as you want to call it :wink: that says "It worths more a picture than a thousand words" so by looking at the photos i can get an vey good idea of wether a car chase is bad or not, because i see every car involved in it wether as pursuing vehicles or a a vehicles set in only one scene in which it has a crash.

I see Antoine and comprenhend theres no need, but then also why not, as i said it is still more information about the car inside the movie, and as we know from out side reviews and things we (at least me) have read there are people who enter the site to cath information about what the car was actually used and not anymore, so why not having it complete and also sayign wether it was destroyed or not in the movie, and i guess :ohwell: some people would find this interesting (at least i hope so).

So for each car you can check none, one or the two.

That sounds OK. And if it's CGI or a replica or fake damage someone should mention it in the comments (or add a picture of chase/crash). At least the person who made the picture knows what happened in the movie (or not?).

For the movie movie_478737-Treasure-Raiders I plan to put some additional pictures online this weekend.

I didn't know that the site www.varaces.com exists. But IMCDB is much, much better.

Have fun...

I was planning to add thumbnails for Treasure riders as well, but ok if you are doing it :wink:

Varaces is a great site (specially for me and chases fans) but sicne the administrator (varace's version of Antoine :lol: ) has more websites he has left varaces a bit forgotten so the site has the same database look since it was created 7 years ago, and that's a shame cause varaces could be a great site with a lot of information about chases and have photos of the crashes/chases, but it is not the case, you say it is much better, well they should not be compared because the purpose on both websites is different but then now, (not done on purpose) imcdb has become (for me at least) more useful to find information about car chases in movies.

The problem I think is the extra work required to fulfill this, since there are already thousands of movies, and even more individual cars. You could also argue that it perhaps strays away from the initial purpose of this site, but the extra details would be pleasing and useful to movie chase fans like carchasesfanatic and myself.
