@atom: isn't there an old junk-yard in Sweden, which was declared as a national heritage site? I've heard
I've looked for "Kyrkömosse" at Google - the first result was a collection of pages with cars from the junkyard, but nothing about the location.
Where is it?
The most known Swedish junkyard over here is Töckfors.

I think it's Kyrkömosse that have that status, can't find any source on that right now though.
I can't get the link to work but type: N 56.46680° E 014.65075° @ http://maps.google.com
I haven't heard about Töckfors, it's pretty close so maybe I could visit it soon.

In the past cars, also tramway-cars and other technical stuff was thrown into the water for settling corals.
In one "Flipper"-episode, I remember, it was shown something about abandoned cars under water. They found out a criminal act, because while snorkeling they've seen a car with windows. I remember, that the father has said, that all car, which were thrown into the sea, had no glass any more.
And I've heard the story about the "world's only underwater-bus-station". It's in South Africa, between Capetown and Robben Island (where Nelson Mandela and other were in prison).
In the 90ies Hillary Clinton visits the island. Because all tourist-buses over there were old and rotten (it's a fact, I took such a wreck-bus at my visit in 2003), they took a brand new Mercedes-bus to Robben Island, transported by a helicopter. On the transport back the rope was torn and the bus felt into the ocean.
And close the that chapel, one of the most photographed sights in Bavaria:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Bartholomä
lies a VW Beetle in the water - and a few meters away the dead driver.
Some years ago there were divers, they have found them. The guy was missed since 1961 or 1963. It was a strong winter and he wanted to drive onto the ice. It was not strong enough.
P.S.I think, the dead body was recovered later.

@CCF:
Yes, the brand new Mercedes-Bus, which was transported just for Hillary Clintion to Robben Island by Helicopter, was dropping from it, caused by a torn rope.
Sorry, I haven't any pics of the VW in the lake. I've remembered the scene from the TV-reportage.

This might be of interest to lovers of junkyards. It takes a long time to download and it gets a bit monotonous, but there are one or two gems. (Look out for the pre-war Buick and the Taunus Weltkügel ).

No, I think it's a Moskvitch (408?) that's been 'customised' by someone who's been frightened by a Morris 1100

Don't you habve a chance to pick it up and bring it home?
If the body has no heavy rust -and how it looks on the pic, it's in a dry area, so it will surely have no rust- everything else should be able to handle with the restoration.
You guys in Spain, Italy or southern France are so lucky with your climate! You cannot imagine the problems of us Middle Europeans with our old cars.

Well Ingo first of all i dont know where that is, i read it on the website the first time i saw it but i cant remember it anymore, it wasnt near my home shamely, in case it was, you cant take a car on the street and take it home, its not as easy as that, at least not here, plus even if it was possible i dont have a place to have it, nor the knowledge needed to restore these cars.
Shamely and unfortunately it is just not easy in any way to pick a car on the street as easy as that

You guys may be interested in this link i provide you, it's in Spanish but i suppose that you can enjoy the pictures anyway, so have a look at it, it's a website of a guy that makes pictures of abandoned places, cars, roads etc, and one of the sections of the website is that, abandoned roads and vehicles, he explains things with the pictures so if any of you have a doubt just ask me, the website is updated usually with the submissions of new pictures.
This is the link for the main page of the site.

Nice pics Atom! That Renault 16 must be saved! Also very nice BMW 2002 Touring - shame to see it in such a shape. My father had two of those.
Yesterday I made a tour to 'Tattarisuo' which is an industrial area in Helsinki. It is completely focused on car repair and dismantling business. It's a shame I didn't take a camera with me But I saw these junk cars:
Renault Goelette, Moskvitsh 2140 (for sale €350), Izh 2715 Pickup, Wartburg 353W (x 2), Commer truck, Ford D-series fire truck, Ford Fairmont, Ford Escort Mk 1 (x 3), MB W115 (x 3), Volvo Amazon, Mercury Sable GS, Hanomag-Henschel F67 Camper, Fiat 127 and Mercury Comet.
There is also an area where city of Helsinki collects all abandoned cars from the streets. There were about 200 cars there. Mostly boring 1980's cars (Golf II, Kadett E etc.) but also three older cars. Volkswagen Scirocco Mk 1, VW Beetle and a true surprise: Austin A60 Cambridge!!!

@atom: do the Swedish scrap-dealers still asking such ridicoulus prices, as in the past? It was unbelievable. My friend from Vesteras had collected a plenty of all kind of old VW-parts, which later on I've sold at eBay.
When I've visited him in 1999 and 2000, I've also bought a lot of things for joking prices. We travelled just around the area Avesta and Vesteras. This was enough.
At the (half-legal) junk-yard in Avesta have been many cars from early 70ies. So we wrecked a 1975 VW Golf nearly completely. We made the mistake, not to cut out the first-version-backpanel. Later I've heard, how much the people are paying for that.
In that year I've seen junkyards, where wrecks of VW T1-Buses were stuck in the mud (I could save just one bad semaphore) and with a lot of 1303 S-Beetles. Probably the red on your pic is such a "premium-Beetle", too.
You are living in the European scrapyard-paradise!
@Raul: Finland shall be not much worse than Sweden, I've heard.
P.S. - @atom: try to save the alloys of the Renault 16, if they are cheap. I think, it's a rare version, which is very demanded.
Perhaps ask Ralph, if some parts of the 02 touring are worth to save, back lid, windows or so.
P.S.II Yes, the Audi is a V8. walter will cry, when he will see it.

Got a tip from a guy at work that ther would be a "round little 50's car" out in the woods that had been sitting there for 20-30 years.
An Austin A30 I guess:
And a bonus, a SAAB 900 Turbo with danish plates:

No, I'm standing on the road and taking the picture. It's a classic place for speedy driving and burn/dump stolen cars or cars that they want insurance from.
That car is problably a mix of those things.
My mon and dad drove by this place some week ago and then it was standing on it's wheels (but crashed) so someone problably flipped it over to steal the wheels...

Indeed the story of the 600 is that the driver, a woman, swerved to miss a motorcyclist that had have an accident and ended up down there, i wonder why it was never towed away.
